British Forces have used these types of fabric straps as early as the mid-20th century; they were sometimes referred to as 'RAF straps' due to their popularity with Royal Air Force pilots.

In 1968 and 1971, these straps were first officially defined as part of the description of the divers' watches within a documented Defence Standard (Def Stan 66-4), specifying they be made from nylon. By 1973, there was a separate standard (Def Stan 66-15) specifically for straps, which also specified the colour Admiralty Grey.
