NSN: 0555 / 6645-99 7995443
Built for elite units of the British Forces, the Royal Marines and Special Boat Service, currently also issued to Royal Navy Divers, Commanders and other specialist roles.
Capable of submersing to 300 metres / 1000ft and made for the toughest conditions. Real history and true provenance associated with this watch which has been issued now for 30+ years. The original MOD specification dates back to 1987, signed by the Officer Commanding Royal Marines for CWC to produce this watch, and it has been issued since then.
Very high quality finish. The matt black finish is as marketed. The lume is spectacularly finished. The bezel has a brilliant click to it. No glare on the glass in the sun.
Nothing flash, fit for purpose and built to last. However this time piece oozes confidence…
Back in 2004 I bought the tritium version of this watch and I still use it and it has attained a beautiful patina through the years. I now have the current version which I hope will attain a similar pattern over the next 20 years. I have worn and collected many dive / military style watches but my heart always comes back to these CWC SBS Divers with their unique day/date display and arrow markings. Long live CWC!
There is more to say about this watch than I have time to share. The fact that it is a diving watch reminds me of all the days I spent exploring the ocean as a kid. My dad was a member of a Millitary unit who's amphibious origins started on the beaches of Normandy. I remember seeing him wear a Rolex Submariner. I grew up hearing stories of his Millitary service and later learned about the Submariners connection to the Millitary. This watch represents to me what the Submariner used to be. A reliable tool for diving and timekeeping rather than a symbol of luxury and opulence.
I'm exited for how each scratch that will adorn its black case will tell a story about its accompanying me through every day of life. With watches, I think there is one end of the spectrum being soulless digital watches and on the other end, lavish luxury watches. This watch finds its home somewhere in the middle ground. There are digital watches out there with more functionality. But when I look at this watch, it speaks to the idea that sometimes it is better to do one or two things to an excellent standard than three or four or ten things to a sub par standard. I am not a flashy person and so I think wearing an illustrious luxury watch would not suit me very well. This watch has a luxury feel in that it is quality but doesn't draw unwanted eyes in public. One thing I noticed was that I did not even have to set the time on the watch. It was miraculously set to my local time zone. It's small things like this that show the kind of attention to detail that I really apreciate. The watches origins being tied to Millitary service reminds me of the ideal of service in general. That loyalty, commitment, and courage are what make the difference in life. This watch is everything I could have ever hoped for and more. I am grateful to wear it. Thank you.
