The G40 Subhunter - general service watch with white dial, black hour and minute hands and red seconds hand. With a 40mm case, domed sapphire crystal, screw-down crown and a 20 atmospheres waterproof rating, the G40 Subhunter is an impressive all-round General Service watch that is also suitable for swimming, watersports and shallow diving.
Swiss-made precision and quality in a rugged durable military stainless steel case with screw down crown and screw case back. Broad arrow on the dial and luminova luminous markings on the dial and hands. Dimensions give more wrist presence, extremely legible dial at a glance.
I wanted to get a mil-spec watch but with a different dial from the popular G10, GS Sapphire, W10, and Mellor series. My understanding is that this watch is mil-spec in every way to MOD requirements except for the dial, which is a civilian variant to the G10-design used in the G10X.
I got the white dial variant - it has a nice vintage look to it, akin to something you might see on old wall clocks. The dial is slightly off white, reinforcing that vintage feel. The dial is super legible and easy to read at a glance. The lume lasts all night, especially when charged with a flashlight for a few secs.
The watch wears extremely comfortably and the increased water resistance, screwdown crown, and domed sapphire crystal are all welcome upgrades for everyday wearability. The domed sapphire is one of the most charming features of this watch, looking a bit like the older domed acrylic crystals on vintage pieces. There's even a slight distortion effect if you look through the crystal at certain angles.
My watch gains roughly 2 seconds a week, very decent for a non-HAQ quartz movement. I also appreciate the very long lithium battery life, which will make the upkeep very affordable and convenient.
The case looks to bead/sand-blasted so it has a matte finish; very appropriate for this type of watch.
Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with the watch; I can strongly recommend this for any enthusiast or even just a one-watch person.
This is my first CWC watch and I couldn’t be happier, even after the honeymoon phase has passed. The watch itself is a great size and I truly love the domed glass, making the dial extra legible when quickly glancing at the time. Customer service was exceptional. Without a doubt they’ve created a returning customer for life.
I’ve had my Subhunter for a month now and I’m really pleased with it. It’s got a lovely vintage look to it and the aged lume is matched perfectly with a khaki ribbed NATO.
Initial thoughts that 40mm without a bezel would look like a dinner plate on the wrist were completely unfounded and make the legibility superb.
Along with the WR and 7 year battery it really does tick a lot of boxes.
